Introduction to the 1-3-7 Model
Problem Statement
For centuries we humans have drawn maps to help us understand and navigate large or complex spaces. Indeed, explorers who did draw maps tended to be the ones who got home again and were able share the tales of their adventures (and reap the profits!).
In the modern world and the modern work environment, the digital workplace is a large and complex place. We need a map to help us understand it and make sure it is providing the required value. So the documentation here is my attempt to map out the modern digital workplace.
I start by setting the scope for what I mean by the digital workplace and by defining its Purpose.
Next, I cover the three Outcome Domains: the dimensions by which we decide what we want good to look like and how we measure progress.
Then I describe the seven Capability Areas that combine into a Value Network of Digital Products and Services to deliver the modern digital workplace.
I call this my 1-3-7 model of the digital workplace.
If you take nothing else away after reading my map, then I hope you’ll find 1-3-7 useful:
- One Purpose
- Three Dimensions
- Seven Capability Areas
Notes on Vision
In support of corporate ambitions including being a great place to work and driving down the cost of operation …
- Reimagine the ways in which applications are made available to users so that who they are, where they are, what they’re trying to do and what device they’re using become a question of access rights and not an inherent constraint of the digital workplace.
- for example opening the door to choose- or even bring-your-own-device.
-
Rationalise to modern tools to address the complexities and debt in the underlying digital workplace administration systems.
- Develop greater UX insight by enhancing the UX tooling and data sets
- and enable actions to drive down UX friction.
